About this prayer
The Litany of the Sacred Heart was assembled from earlier private litanies, chief among them one composed at Marseilles by Venerable Anne Madeleine Remuzat during the plague of 1720 and an older form from the Visitation convent at Dijon. Drawn together, they gave twenty-seven invocations, which Rome long declined to approve for public use. Leo XIII granted that approval at last in 1899, the same year in which he consecrated the whole human race to the Sacred Heart, adding six invocations to bring the number to thirty-three, one for each year our Lord lived on earth.
The invocations are almost all drawn from Holy Scripture, and they carry the soul through the whole mystery of Christ: the Heart formed by the Holy Ghost in the womb of the Virgin, united substantially to the Word, the house of God and the gate of heaven, the burning furnace of charity; then the same Heart filled with reproaches, bruised for our offences, made obedient unto death, and pierced with a lance. It is prayed above all in the month of June, on the First Fridays, and at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, and it closes with the versicle our Lord gave of Himself: learn of Me, because I am meek and humble of heart.
